Luck of the pool contributed to sending Coupeville out of finals of the 1A State Volleyball Tournament, held Friday and Saturday at the Yakima SunDome.

The tournament began Friday with pool play consisting of 4 pools of 4 teams each. The Wolves were selected for Pool A, which also included Freeman, Zillah and Toutle Lake.

In round one of pool play Friday morning, Coupeville defeated Freeman 15-6, 15-12. Later in the day Coupeville lost to Zillah in a 15-6, 9-15, 15-3 match.

Because of the loss Friday afternoon, the Wolf girls faced a make or break situation Saturday morning when they began round three of pool play against Toutle Lake. The Wolves had to win if they wanted to continue on to match play later that day. Toutle Lake downed the Wolves 15-9, 15-7 and Coupeville was out of the tournament.

Coupeville was the lone Western Washington school in pool A, which was filled with highly competitive east of the mountains girls. Fellow Northwest A and Tri-District teams were scattered in the other three pools.

Life Christian, who fell to Coupeville in round two of the Tri-District tourney Nov. 9, played in pool B. They managed to play one round of match play Saturday, losing to La Conner 15-7, 15-8. Pool D placed Northwest A teams La Conner and Orcas against Eastern Washington’s Columbia (Burbank) and Kalama. Orcas, who ended their regular season in third place in the Northwest A, failed to make it to day two after going 0-3 in pool play.

Tournament final Saturday was between Freeman, which Coupeville defeated in pool play the day before, and La Conner, the Northwest A league champs who took second to the Wolves at district. La Conner beat Freeman 9-15, 15-10 and 16-14 and won the championship.

Coupeville finished league play with a record of 6-4, 11-5 overall, sitting third in the Northwest A.
