Dog killed in mobile home fire

A dog was killed and a mobile home was destroyed in a fire on North Whidbey Friday night.

A dog was killed and a mobile home was destroyed in a fire on North Whidbey Friday night, according to North Whidbey Fire and Rescue.

Chief Chris Swiger said firefighters got the call about the fire at 6 p.m. The singlewide manufactured home was located in an area of Sawmill and Taylor roads that was hard to reach, he said, so the fire was raging by the time firefighters were able to get to the site.

North Whidbey Fire and Rescue was joined by the Navy fire department. The fire took about half an hour to extinguish, the chief said.

The two residents of the home were not present during the fire, but a dog inside the house was killed in the blaze. The home was a total loss.

Swiger said the cause of the fire can’t be determined because of the extent of the damage.

The house didn’t have electricity, he said, but had been hooked up to a solar power system that the residents weren’t supposed to be using, according to the chief.
