Two artists from the Whidbey Island community have been selected to develop original artwork for the new Coupeville Library.
Greenbank sculptor Glen Russell has been commissioned to design a project for the library’s children’s area entrance; multi-media artist Daniel Sirak of Coupeville will create an original work for the library’s main entrance.
The Coupeville Library Art Committee selected Russell and Sirak’s design concepts to be well suited to meet the library and community needs. Both artists presented work which represent historical and cultural qualities of island life.
Russell’s work can be seen at the Island County Museum (carved cherry wood doors), and in 1988 he created the hand carved red cedar Coupeville Library sign that welcomed visitors to the previous library. His proposal for the remodeled library’s children’s area is a graphic depiction of the local waterfront and surrounding area.
Sirak’s design concept for the entrance captures the natural beauty of Central Whidbey Island and the town itself, with water, wharf, birds and tree line spanning the main entrance in sturdy wrought iron signage. Sirak’s professional background includes design work, Web design, branding/logo development, signage and more for commercial businesses such as: Cold Stone Creamery, Four Seasons and Honeywell.
Both art projects are expected to be completed and installed in the renovated and expanded Coupeville Library late this spring.
