Where there’s smoke there’s no fire at IDEX

About 30 IDEX Health and Science employees got an unexpected early lunch break - or possibly an early start to their weekend - after smoke forced an emergency evacuation of one of their buildings on Goldie Road late Friday morning.

About 30 IDEX Health and Science employees got an unexpected early lunch break – or possibly an early start to their weekend – after smoke forced an emergency evacuation of one of their buildings on Goldie Road late Friday morning.

Oak Harbor Fire Department’s Engine 81 and Ladder 81, North Whidbey Fire and Rescue’s Engine 25, two command vehicles and one ambulance responded to the call said Oak Harbor Fire Chief Mark Soptich.

Several evacuated employees recorded the event with their cell phone cameras while firefighters set up ventilation fans to blow smoke from the building.

This isn’t IDEX’s first call for help, said Oak Harbor Fire Chief Mark Soptich.

Randy Lamb, general manager, confirmed that IDEX had a similar issue with “smoke in our equipment” several years ago.

Lamb reported that there was “just smoke and no flames” when the fire departments arrived at the scene this morning. The business, which manufactures tubing for analytical instruments, has been at its current Goldie Road location since 1980, he said.

No one was injured as a result of the incident. Officials had not determined the cause or amount of damage by press time.
