Two gyms for the price of one

Oak Harbor facilities merge

It’s 2 a.m. and you’ve got a hankering to pump some iron?

Head to the gym on Midway Boulevard.

Excalibur Gym, located in the log building, will offer 24-hour access for people looking for a late-nght workout.

It’s the latest feature that comes out of the merging of two Oak Harbor fitness centers.

Excalibur Gym and North End Fitness Center merged last month and members can now take advantage of programs at both gyms.

Yvette Esparza, who co-owns the gym with her husband, Noah, said she combined the membership lists when she purchased Excalibur Gym.

With the merging, Excalibur Gym members will be able to take aerobics, yoga and kickboxing classes, while North End Fitness members will be able to take advantage of the 24-hour availability of Excalibur Gym, which will soon have new weightlifting equipment.

Even though the membership rolls have been combined, members can still exercise out of both locations.

Esparza originally wanted to combine the two gyms and move to a location in downtown Oak Harbor. However, it turned out there was two years left on the Excalibur Gym lease.

“It was an interesting glitch, but I had to adapt,” Esparaza said.

She considered eventually moving into the soon-to-be-built building on old Copeland Lumber site, but that turned out to be too expensive.

Another fitness center, Thrive Fitness, is planning to open up once the new building at the former Copeland Lumber site is built. By then, Esparaza hopes she will have built a loyal enough clientele to prosper despite the new competition.

“As long as we keep our members happy, we should be OK,” Esparaza said.

Eventually, she hopes to find a large enough spot, about 10,000 square feet, to merge the two clubs. Excalibur’s lease doesn’t run out until December 2008.

North End Fitness has operated out of its Seventh Street location for several years. Prior to that it was known as Studio M, which offered exercise classes out of a Fidalgo Avenue storefront. It originally opened in 2003.

Esparaza taught classes at the club before purchasing it two years ago.

Studio M started out with 60 members. Since then, the number of residents enrolling in the club has exploded. Esparaza said she currently has approximately 600 members.

She hopes to continue branch-

ing out into the community to gain more members. She plans to work with the Oak Harbor Senior Center and offer cardio and strength classes geared toward seniors.

There was work to be done to Excalibur Gym for it to accommodate people at all hours. An access card system was installed, and in case of emergency, a panic alarm system will be installed. That way, should an accident occur, someone can press a button on a bracelet and help will come.

When not working at the gym, Esperaza is busy with her family. She is expecting a new daughter any day now. She’s already picked out a name, Kirra, for the baby. She has a second daughter, Reilly, who is 6 years old.

North End Fitness Center is open 4:30 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. Rates are $40 a month with a 12-month contract, $65 on a monthly bases, and a $7 daily rate. There is a $75 enrollment fee that is currently being waived. For more information call 675-1111.
