While real winners at Relay for Life are cancer survivors and the local American Cancer Society, relay teams do get personal satisfaction from the awards.

Team spirit: NAS Whidbey’s Navy and Marine Training Unit (NAMTRAU) and Personnel Support Detachment (PSD).

Best decorated campsite: NAMTRAU and Upchurch Scientific.

Best costumes: Navy Federal Credit Union’s clowns and NAMTRAU with their “Make cancer ancient history” theme.

Most Laps Walked (team): Navy Exchange team 5, with 469 laps and Navy Exchange team 4 with 320 laps.

Most Laps Walked (individual): Joanna Seppa, 125 laps.

Funds will allow local American Cancer Society unit to expand services to cancer patients and their families, to offer more educational programs to reduce people’s risk of contracting cancer and to expand cancer research.

Approximately 40 percent of funds raised in the relay go to directly support local cancer patients while only 4 percent goes toward management. When it comes to cancer research, the local benefit is even greater with millions going to Washington research centers including University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
