Teenager arrested after tip jar theft in Oak Harbor

A teen runaway from Tacoma is facing charges after stealing money from a tip jar and shoplifting.

A 17-year-old runaway boy from Tacoma is facing charges after stealing money from a tip jar at an Oak Harbor Starbucks and shoplifting at a couple of stores on Dec. 10, according to court documents.

The teenager’s female friend allegedly tried to throw off employees by claiming she was a witness and that a “Native American person” stole the money, according to a report by an officer with the Oak Harbor Police Department.

Prosecutors charged the boy in Island County Juvenile Court Dec. 13 with three counts of theft in the third degree, obstructing a law enforcement officer and drug possession.

A judge set the teenager’s bail at $1,500 on Dec. 11.

The police report states that an employee reported a white male stole the tip jar from the Starbucks inside Safeway and ran off. An officer managed to find the teenager in the thick brush and swamp of the Freund Marsh and took him into custody at “taser point,” according to the report.

The boy refused to give his name to the police. An officer looked inside his backpack to try to find a an ID, but allegedly found drugs and items stolen from the Walmart and Safeway, including fruit, candy, a drone, an Xbox controller and fishing supplies, the officer wrote.

During the arrest, the girl who was seen with the boy started recording the officers, but she was not identified, court records indicate.

The report states that it took an officer about two hours to figure out the boy’s identity, which left the city short on officers. He was eventually identified as a runaway who has pending arrests out of Pierce County for harassment and arson.
