Student joins school board

The Oak Harbor School District Board of Directors welcomed a new student board member this month, the beginning of a one-year term of office.

Chris Brown, a 17-year-old junior at Oak Harbor High School, was appointed by the board after an interview process. He replaced outgoing student board member Lois Ignacio.

The student board member, a non-voting position, has the responsibility of acting as a liaison between students and the board of directors. Brown will bring students’ concerns and input to the board, as well as report to the board on student activities and events.

“I just hope to bring any issues of great importance at the high school and see them get resolved,” Brown said during a recess of the board meeting Monday night.

Brown is active in Associated Student Body and leadership class at the high school, which puts him in a position to receive information and feedback from the student population.

Upon graduating high school in June 2003, Brown hopes to go to the University of Washington and then on to New York University School of Law.

A resident of Oak Harbor for about 8 years, Brown is the son of Mark and Sandra Brown.
