Dust off those bowling shoes!

The 10th annual Bowl For Kids Sake fundraiser is set for Saturday, April 19 at Oak Bowl in Oak Harbor, so come have fun and support our kids.

Have fun with your friends at a great bowling party with lots of prizes, and gain the satisfaction of knowing you’ve helped a child who needs a friend and a mentor. Funds raised go directly toward matching children with carefully screened, caring Big Brother and Big Sister volunteers.

Share in the magic of connecting a child with a mentor. Every dollar raised by Bowl For Kids Sake bowlers will help to provide support for the children in our community.

Yacht Club sponsors races

The sail fleet from the Oak Harbor Yacht Club invites local sailors and their crews to get their boats ready and join the Thursday night Spring Series of sailboat racing.

The series starts Thursday, April 3, with races scheduled for April 10, April 17 and the final race on April 24.

A skippers’ meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. April 3 downstairs, at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club, and the event begins at 6 p.m.

The races will use P.H.R.F./one design ratings. If you do not have a P.H.R.F. rating, one will be assigned to you.

U.S. Sailing Rules 2005-08 will be in effect.

This series is free and skippers will be able to register prior to race day by calling Dave French at 678-1799 or emailing grins@whidbey.net.

At the conclusion of the series, sailors and crew members are invited to the Oak Harbor Yacht Club for the trophy presentation April 24.

BoatSmart safe boating class

The Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron is offering a two-day BoatSmart class from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 5, and Saturday, April 12, in Hayes Hall room 113 at the Whidbey Island campus of Skagit Valley College in Oak Harbor.

This class covers boating basics including rules of the road, boating safety, required equipment, navigational aids, radio operations and seaman knots.

The course will qualify boaters for the new Washington State safe boating cards, which are now available for $10, and a copy of your BoatSmart Certificate after passing the test on April 12.

The cost is $25 for books and the examination, and spouses or family members who share a book are charged $13.

Registration starts at 7:45 a.m. April 5, and class fees are due at that time.

Handy Dandy promises fun

The Handy Dandy bowling league at the Oak Bowl in Oak Harbor, for folks of all ages with challenges begins Wednesday, May 7, and continues through July 30.

The league is non-competitive and the goal is to have fun and meet new people.

If you or someone you know has a disability and would like to join the fun this summer, please call 240-1472 for more information. Who knows, you might even make a new friend!

People with severe challenges may be required to bring an aide.

The cost is $6 per week for two games and includes shoes.

Fishing seminar at Yacht Club

The Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron will present a one-day fishing seminar entitled “Fishing Our Home Waters” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club.

The cost to attend is $30 per person, and includes break refreshments, a light lunch and, as usual, a door prize drawing.

Topics scheduled for discussion include fishing in several nearby locations, including Whidbey Island, Admiralty Inlet, the Eastern Straits, San Juan Islands and The Gulf Islands of British Columbia.

Proven hot spots will be revealed, along with the most effective gear and tactics that will put fish on your line.

To be an effective presentation the seminar is limited to 30 attendees, so sign up now.

Adult sailing lessons offered

Beginning adult sailing lessons are offered by Oak Harbor Youth Sailing program on six consecutive Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. starting April 22 at the Oak Harbor Marina.

Participants age 16 and older, will learn how to sail on 14-foot Lido sailboats.

They will also learn basics of rigging the boat, steering techniques, sailing rules, trimming sails, racing rules, and boating safety.

The cost of the six-week session is $125 and $12 for the sailing textbook which can be purchased at the first class session.
