Special pheasant hunts set for youth, seniors

A youth and senior special pheasant hunt for Island County residents will be held at the Navy OLF Coupeville hunting site located north of the landing field off Patmore Road.

The youth hunt will be Sept. 20 and 21 for licensed hunters under the age of 16.

The senior hunt is for hunters 65 and older and will be held from Sept. 22 to 26.

According to John Phillips, Environmental Affairs Office, NAS Whidbey, hunters 16 and older are required to obtain a naval installation hunting permit and sign the hunting acknowledgement form. Contact the office in Building 113 or call 257-1009 for information on how to obtain a hunting permit.

Permits cost $10. Phillips recommends that non-military hunters send for a permit early by mail (Environmental Affairs Dept., Building 113, Ault Field, 1155 West Lexington, Oak Harbor WA 98278-3800).

Youth hunters must have a hunting acknowledgement form signed by their legal guardian prior to Sept. 20 to participate in the hunt. Contact the Navy Environmental Affairs Office for information on where to obtain this form.

Phillips said a limited number of forms will be available at the hunting site for those youth coming from out of the area.

All Island County pheasant hunters are required to use non-lead shot and the odd/even rule will be in effect on Saturdays and Sundays for hunters 16 to 64 years old. For more information, contact the Environmental Affairs Office. Also let the office know if you would like to be a volunteer mentor hunter.
