Remembering 9/11

Volunteers place flags on Burley Funeral Chapel’s lawn last Saturday to honor the 2,977 people who lost their lives during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Volunteers place flags on Burley Funeral Chapel’s lawn last Saturday to honor the 2,977 people who lost their lives during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. This was the third year that Burley’s hosted the event. After an introduction, prayer and moment of silence, Oak Harbor and North Whidbey fire department personnel placed 405 flags, each representing a lost firefighter, police officer or EMT, on Burley’s front lawn.  Once this task was completed, the firefighters joined community volunteers to help place the remaining 2,572 flags. The memorial will remain in place until Sept. 21, International Peace Day.
