One man caught, one still at large

Investigators with the Island County Sheriff’s Office are still looking for one of the two fugitives wanted since mid-August in connection with two separate assault cases.

One of the two North Whidbey men, 26-year-old Colin Berner, is currently in Island County jail. He is being held on five warrants for his arrest, totaling $50,000.

Capt. Rick Wallace with the Oak Harbor Police said officers arrested him in the city on the afternoon of Sept. 26 after a traffic stop. He was taken into custody without incident.

Berner was sought on suspicion of felony-level domestic violence assault and assault on a police officer, according to a release from the Sheriff’s Office.

The other fugitive, 30-year-old Willie “Will” Rainey, is still at large. He is being sought for multiple counts of felony-level domestic violence assault, felon in possession of a firearm and burglary in the first degree, according to the Sheriff’s Office. There is currently a $500,000 warrant for his arrest.

Detective Ed Wallace with the Sheriff’s Office said Rainey is armed and should be considered dangerous.

Rainey is about 6-feet tall and more than 200 pounds.

Detective Wallace said media coverage of the two fugitives generated a couple of tips on Rainey’s whereabouts, but nothing panned out. The two men were wanted at the same time, but in connection with separate, unrelated incidents.

The Sheriff’s Office asked anyone having information about Rainey’s whereabouts to call 911 or the I-COM dispatch center at 679-9567.

The Sheriff’s Office also reminds the public that anyone found harboring these subjects could face criminal charges as well.
