Oak Harbor still looks to claw its way to district

The Oak Harbor volleyball team spiked down two wins this week to bring their league record to 3-3 and 6-5 overall, following Thursday’s league matches.

The Wildcats defeated Cascade 3-0, posting game scores of 15-9, 15-12 and 15-9.

“We had outstanding defense, and did a great job transitioning to a strong offense. They really started putting it all together,” said Oak Harbor coach Kerri Molitor of her girls’ play.

Oak Harbor is looking at two tough matches ahead of them next week when they face Mount Vernon Tuesday and Monroe Thursday, but Molitor feels “like the team is improving every day, and are ready to push toward their goal of playing at the district tournament.”

Stats leaders for the night included Heidi McNeill with 16 kills, two blocks, three aces and 10 digs; Camille Merritt with eight kills, three aces and 10 digs; Rachel Pitt with seven kills, three aces and 20 digs; Kristen Barone with four aces and 12 digs; Alicia Lancaster with four blocks; and Nikki Barone put forth 33 assists.

Earlier this week, the Wildcats played Lake Stevens and defeated the visitors in another three game match. Oak Harbor held Lake Stevens down, and won 15-9, 15-0 and 15-11.

“I was really proud of the girls. We have been working on playing consistently throughout a game and match. They have been having trouble pushing through to finish out a game, and Tuesday night they really played with consistency. We wouldn’t have known what the score was by how the girls were performing on the court,” Molitor said.

According to Molitor, they played “the way they’ve been looking to play,” adding that it “doesn’t matter if we are up by 10 or down by 10, we should be performing at our level. We also played more mentally tough. Knowing after the JV match that our official was going to make some very tight calls.”

Stat leaders for Tuesday included Heidi McNeill with nine kills, four aces and one block; Yolanda Garcia with four kills and three aces; Nikki Barone with 13 assists; and Kristen Barone with eight digs and one ace. Molitor also points to solid performances by Rachel Pitt, Camille Merritt and Kanessa Stratton.

Next up, the Cats face down Mount Vernon Tuesday, Oct. 29, and hope to spook Monroe on Halloween, Oct. 31.
