It’s been quite a run for Coupeville’s Amy Mouw.
In the last six athletic seasons, she has taken part in six state events, competing in volleyball, basketball and track.
“I would be amazed that in the history of Coupeville sports there has been anybody who has competed in six consecutive state events,” Coupeville track coach Greg Oldham said.
Mouw couldn’t have ended her state run in a more appropriate fashion, taking the Class 1A state title in the 800-meters at Eastern Washington University Saturday afternoon.
“She ran the perfect race on Saturday in the 800-meters,” Oldham said.
With less than a lap remaining, Mouw turned on the jets and made the move that helped her claim the state title.
“With about 300-meters left to go she pretty much broke their will,” Oldham said.
Mouw finished the race with a personal best 2:21.54, edging out Amy Layton of Toledo at 2:22.17.
“I was really excited, but it didn’t really hit me for a while,” Mouw said.
With the win Mouw claimed the first track and field state title for Coupeville since Natasha Bamberger won the 3200-meter title in 1986. Along with receiving the 1A title in the 800-meters, she also added to an outstanding record. In two seasons at Coupeville, Mouw only came across the finish line in less than first place once. A second place finish at last year’s state meet was the only time she didn’t take home first in the 800-meters.
“She probably had a total of over 30 wins in her career,” Oldham said.
Mouw also received an eighth place finish in the 400-meters on Saturday with a time of 1:02.67. She used the event as more of a tension-breaker for the 800.
“I get really, really nervous before running,” Mouw said. “So after running the 400 I wasn’t as nervous.”
Although she now lays claim to a state title in the 800, the event is not her favorite and she is relieved she won’t have to run it again anytime soon.
“I guess I just do it because it’s a natural God-given talent, so why not,” she said.
Competing as the only member of the Coupeville track and field team, Mouw racked up 11 team points, good enough for 26th place. King’s High School won the 1A girls meet with 57 points.
