It took two playoff holes, but Oak Harbor High School’s Mac Kerfoot earned a trip to the state 3A boys golf tournament with a strong finish at the district tournament at the Snohomish Golf Course Tuesday and Wednesday, May 14 and 15.

Kerfoot was in 19th place after a day-one round of 83 Tuesday, four spots and two strokes out of 15th, the cutoff line for qualifying for state.

The Oak Harbor sophomore fired a 78 Wednesday, tying Meadowdale’s Joey Haughney for 15th at 161 and forcing a playoff.

The pair each parred the first extra hole, then Kerfoot won it with another par on the second.

Oak Harbor coach David Smith said watching the playoff was “nerve-wracking” but was proud to see his golfer coolly sink three-to-four foot putts on each hole to earn the state berth.

Smith said he told Kerfoot a score in the high 70s would most likely earn a state spot, but as the scores were being reported throughout the round, he wasn’t sure if that would do it. Turned out a 78 worked just fine.

Oak Harbor’s Caleb Knaack shot a first-day 86 and was the only other Wildcat to make the cut of 90 to qualify for the second day.

Day two started well for Knaack, only two over after 13 with the help of an eagle on 10. The junior finished with a personal tournament-best 79 and a two-day total of 165, four shots from qualifying for state.

Raiden Poe missed the day-two cut by one stroke with a 91. Hunter Adams shot a 94 and Quinnton Wallace 99.

The district team champion was determined by the first-day scores and Oak Harbor finished fifth with a 453 in the 11-team tournament after placing fourth in the five-team Wesco North during the regular season.

Meadowdale (402) earned the team title in a close race with Everett (403) and Glacier Peak (407).

Halen Davis of Stanwood was the district individual champion with a five-over 147.

The state tournament is Tuesday and Wednesday, May 21 and 22, at the Tri-Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield.
