A wet field at Hillcrest Elementary School kept both teams from taking infield practice but for the first inning of Oak Harbor’s Friday non-league softball game against Lynnwood, the Wildcats didn’t need any warming up.
Nikki Mowbray led things off for the Wildcats smacking a double down the third base line and senior center fielder Jessica
Kallander followed by depositing a one-strike offering from Royals’ pitcher Chloe Gounswaard over the fence in right-centerfield to put Oak Harbor ahead 2-0.
Kallander had three of Oak Harbor’s six hits in the game, including a second-inning double.
“That home run was the first one I’ve ever hit that went out of the park,” she said. “She was a slow pitcher and the ball was pretty much down the middle. Maybe a little high, but I got it and yanked it.”
Oak Harbor put another run on the board in the bottom of the first inning on a bases loaded walk to Amber Hamming, that plated Anna Skurdal to make the score 3-0.
After that, Oak Harbor’s bats went silent and so did the run production.
Lynnwood scored a single run in the top of the second inning and three more in the top of the third off losing pitcher Emily Meagher to take a 4-3 lead.
In the third, singles by Julia Nealer and Kelsie Parker, a double by Jerrica Kang and a throwing error put the Royals in front to stay.
“It was a good lesson for us to learn early in the season,” coach Chris Rankin said. “We’re not good enough to dial it in against anybody, we have to play hard all 21 outs.”
The Wildcats put together a good defensive effort and only one error led to Lynnwood scoring a run but on offense, the Wildcats managed just four hits after the first inning.
Kallander had a double in the second inning and a single in the fourth, Mary Ryan singled in the fifth and Kaylee Meders collected a single in the sixth.
Lynnwood bunched together three hits in the top of the fourth inning to score its final two runs.
“We had a let down in intensity today and that’s what cost us the game,” Rankin said.
Oak Harbor’s next home game is at 4 p.m. Thursday against Arlington.
