Approach the person in an understanding, non-blaming way.

Acknowledge that it is scary and difficult to talk about the abuse. Let her know that she does not deserve to be treated this way and that she in not the cause of the abuse.

Support her as a friend. Be a good listener and do not tell her what to do. Allow her to make her own decisions. Avoid ultimatums.

Consider that leaving an abusive relationship is often the most dangerous time for a woman and her children. It is important to talk to an advocate about safety planning.

Let her know she is not alone.
