A nearly perfect storm drowned the Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team in a 52-12 loss at Glacier Peak Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Combine a good team – with its strong defense and rebounding – with a horrendous shooting night by the Wildcats, and the result is a dozen points.

The Grizzlies (6-2, 13-2), ranked fifth in the state 3A poll, employed a sticky man-to-man defense that denied entry passes to the wing, according to Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins. Under the attack, Atkins added, it was over four minutes before the Wildcats attempted their first shot.

When Oak Harbor did put up a shot, it rarely went in. The ‘Cats hit only 4 of 30 tries (including 1 for 11 on three-pointers) for 13 percent.

To compound matters, “Glacier Peak had 20 defensive boards which really limited any second-chance points we could have had,” Atkins said.

Oak Harbor never scored more than four points in a period and trailed 13-2, 32-5 and 46-9 at the quarters.

Joanna Leete scored five points for Oak Harbor; Jinai Guzman, Hayley Lundstrom and AnnaBelle Whitefoot two each; and Natalie Fiallos one.

Oak Harbor (0-8, 0-14) goes to Stanwood (4-4, 7-7) at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23.
