Unlike Oak Harbor, the Glacier Peak High School boys basketball team took advantage of its extra opportunities to net a 63-50 win at Oak Harbor Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Both teams had 11 turnovers and Glacier Peak collected only two more offensive rebounds (16-14), but the Grizzlies, who are tied for first in the Wesco 3A South, outscored the Wildcats 12-4 off the miscues and 15-6 off the boards.

Glacier Peak led by only two, 14-12, after the first quarter even though Oak Harbor committed six turnovers.

The Grizzlies started the second quarter on a 9-0 run to up the margin to 23-12.

Oak Harbor trimmed the gap to 25-21 before GP went into halftime up 30-27.

Glacier Peck (6-2, 11-3) dominated the third quarter, thanks in part to cold Oak Harbor shooting. Doing most of its damage inside, Glacier Peak took a 44-28 lead into the final period.

The Grizzlies pushed their lead to 18, 53-35, before a final, late push by Oak Harbor.

Drew Washington, who played with the flu, had 16 points and three assists for the Wildcats. Zach Gibbs snared 12 rebounds to go along with seven points.

Dyllan Harris scored 10 points, Elijah Smith six, Zach Jones six, Gabe Groenig three and Shane Huttula two.

Brady Southard had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Glacier Peak. Luke Neill added 13 points and Trey Chambers 12.

“We struggle with teams like that – who pressure and are physical,” Oak Harbor coach Mike Washington said. “Their pressure caused us to play too fast.”

Wesco’s best team, third-ranked Stanwood (8-0, 15-0), comes to town to play the Wildcats (3-5, 3-11) at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23.
