The Cedarcrest High School softball team hit the ball, Coupeville didn’t, and the result was a 13-2, five-inning  win for the visiting Red Wolves Wednesday, April 16.

Cedarcrest (3-6, 3-7) pounded 17 hits and took advantage of five Coupeville errors to score in every inning. The Wolves finished with only four hits.

The Red Wolves scored one run in the top of the first but were stopped from adding on when Coupeville shortstop Madeline Roberts turned a line-out into a double play with the bases loaded.

Then Coupeville scored two in its half to take the lead. McKayla Bailey reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on Hailey Hammer’s double. Maddi Strasburg followed with a triple to plate Hammer.

The Wolves trailed only 4-2 after three innings, then the Red Wolves erupted for nine runs in the next two.

Seven of the nine Cedarcrest starters had at least two hits.

“We struggled once we got down in the second inning,” said co-coach David King. “The intensity wasn’t there and we are still making the same mistakes we did at the beginning of the season.”

Roberts was forced to leave the game after a bad hop on a throw caused a bloody nose. She later returned to the game to bat and was hit by a pitch.

It was that type of game.

Coupeville (2-6, 3-6) hosts Lakewood (4-3, 6-3) at 4 p.m. Friday, April 18.
