An Oak Harbor man is accused of trying to run over the wrong man twice, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged 23-year-old Jackson L. Campbell in Island County Superior Court Nov. 10 with two counts of assault in the second degree.

On Nov. 9, an employee for a natural gas installation company was working at the Wagon Wheel trailer park near Oak Harbor when someone in a black Dodge Dakota pickup truck tried to run him down, according to a report by a deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

The man reported that he saw the truck leave a trailer early in the morning and then he heard the engine being revved. A short time later the truck came speeding down a hill at him and he had to sprint to the side of the road to avoid it, the deputy wrote.

The man continued walking down Heller Road and met with another employee. While they were talking they saw the truck return. It accelerated and steered toward the man, who jumped out of the way but got struck in the leg; the truck struck a PVC pipe that the company was installing, the report states.

The deputy spoke to the resident of the trailer and learned that Campbell had driven off in a black pickup that morning. The deputy called Campbell, who allegedly admitted to trying to run down the man and said he thought it was his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, the report states.

If convicted of the charges against him, Campbell could face up to 14 months in prison under the standard sentencing range.
