I am a high school student and I am very interested in government and politics. I became interested in politics after the national election two years ago in Florida.

One local campaign I find interesting is the Bill Thorn campaign. It seems to me that people speaking out against Mr. Thorn are doing so on vanity of partisan politics instead of good common sense.

From what I understand, I know there are three county commissioners. I also know that two of the commissioners are Republican and that Mr. Thorn is the lone Democrat. What I don’t understand is how Mr. Thorn can make really bad decisions, of which he has been accused, without the help of at least one Republican commissioner. In other words, if I am to believe that we live in a democratic country and honestly vote for change, then the majority of a vote wins. In Island County government we cannot have a majority vote without at least one Republican. So, how can Mr. Thorn be solely responsible for bad changes and not be re-elected?

From my research I found that Mr. Thorn is working in harmony with two Republican commissioners. He has much more experience and is better qualified as a commissioner than his opponent.

If I could vote this election I would vote for Mr. Thorn and take a serious look at the Republican commissioners when it’s their time to run for re-election if Island County is really in dire straits.
