Club relocated due to sewage problems

The Oak Harbor Boys and Girls Club became unusable due to a sewage system problem on Jan. 13.

Sewage issues at the Boys and Girls Club of Oak Harbor forced the club to relocate temporarily to the Roller Barn.

Chief Operations Officer DJ Lockwood said the Oak Harbor Boys and Girls Club became unusable due to a sewage-system problem on Jan. 13.

“We thought it was a clogged sewer pipe and had a company come out to unclog the line. When we looked to find the clog, we found out the pipe was broken,” he explained in an email.

The fixes are already in progress, Lockwood said, on the Boys and Girls Club Expense, though Communications Officer Magi Aguilar said the city is happy to assist if needed.

“We appreciated the city allowing us to get to work on this right away,” Lockwood added.

P & L General Contractor began work on the pipe, according to Marci Volmer, the Boys and Girls Club president and CEO. In the meantime, the Boys and Girls Club will be temporarily relocated to the Roller Barn as the plumbing is fixed and the building is deep-cleaned, Volmer said.

“We are working diligently to get this fixed and back into our building, but we appreciate the Roller Barn allowing us to use their location,” Lockwood said.

Originally, a member of the Boys and Girls Club staff posted to Facebook that it was a city sewage issue. Volmer said they are now aware of the mistake and it has since been corrected.

“As always, the Oak Harbor community has stepped in to make sure that kids still have a place to be,” Volmer said.
