The city of Oak Harbor will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the latest addition to its trail system: a new gravel pathway to the end of Maylor Point.

Last April, during the opening of the boardwalk connection between Windjammer and Flintstone parks, Whidbey Island Naval Air Station Commanding Officer Gerral David announced a partnership between the Navy and the city to extend the waterfront “fitness trail” from the Yacht Club, where it currently ends, to Maylor Point on Seaplane Base property.

Following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the Navy restricted public access to the Seaplane Base, and consequently to Maylor Point.

The much-anticipated trail extension had long been a topic of discussion and the change in base classification re-opened the discussion of the trail extension, David said at the boardwalk opening last year.

This more recent addition increases the city’s waterfront trail system to three miles of uninterrupted pathway along Oak Harbor Bay.

The Maylor Point trail ribbon cutting ceremony will be held Thursday, April 29, at 3:30 p.m. at Maylor Point.
