There’s no need for an excuse to play with driftwood along the Whidbey Island shoreline during Oak Harbor’s third annual Driftwood Day at Windjammer Park.

Join hundreds of beachcombers Saturday, Sept. 19, and create a one-of-a-kind driftwood sculpture or walk along the beach and admire the work of others.

Last year more than 140 islanders built driftwood structures including lean-to shelters, mighty thrones and sea creatures.

Registration is free and starts at 11:30 a.m. Look for the tent near the west end boat ramp. The contest will begin at noon.

Judging by artist Kevin Pettelle, Mayor Jim Slowik, Capt. Gerral David and Oak Harbor Arts Commission members will take place at 1:30 p.m.

Bring a punic lunch and watch the creations take shape, or make a return trip to watch the harbor reclaim the beach and art as the tide rolls in.
