A 50-year-old Oak Harbor woman accused of stealing more than $10,000 from an elderly woman is wanted on a $5,000 bench warrant.
Prosecutors charged Nina Mills in Island County Superior Court May 21 with theft in the first degree. If convicted of the charge, she would face up to 90 days behind bars under the standard sentencing range.
Mills was a caretaker for an elderly, North Whidbey woman in exchange for living in her home for free, according to a report by Island County Sheriff Lt. Mike Hawley.
On Feb. 21, the woman’s son reported that money was taken from his mother’s bank account while she was in the hospital for a lengthy stay. In all, $10,620 was withdrawn over a three-month period.
Hawley tracked debit card withdrawals from the victim’s accounts. He obtained photos taken from ATMs, which appeared to show Mills taking money from the woman’s account, Hawley wrote.
Mills, however, denied making any withdrawals without the woman’s consent, the report states.
Island County Superior Court Judge Alan Hancock issued a bench warrant on Mills after she failed to appear for a June 4 hearing.
