Business helps students achieve

Whidbey Island parents now have the luxury of discernment when choosing geographically accessible, quality tutoring for their children.

Oak Harbor’s Achieve Learning Center opened its doors in October.

The teachers settle for no less than providing top notch tutoring at an affordable price to families. Academic assessment, WASL and SAT preparation, and school consultation, including a walkthrough of the special education process, round out the extensive services offered.

Achieve focuses on personal attention and careful diagnostics that identify specific skill deficiencies, according to Angela Ohme, director.

Ohme is a special education teacher with extensive training in administering academic assessments and providing individualized instruction. Her decade of experience at every educational level, including college, and her post graduate degree in education, are augmented by a team of highly trained, state-certified teachers, all of whom have at least five years of experience as an educator and master’s level degrees.

“I have high expectations of all the teachers at Achieve Learning Center,” Ohme said. “It is important to me that the teachers working one-on-one with students are veteran teachers with many years of experience and knowledge.” That way parents can be assured that their child is receiving the highest quality of teaching, she said.

Achieve places an emphasis on quality and affordability, making the learning center accessible to more families.

“I have gotten overwhelming support from Oak Harbor as well as the Coupeville community,” Ohme said. “The need in this community is top quality tutoring by highly qualified teachers at a price that is more affordable than what other tutoring services can offer.

“For many families, high quality tutoring has been out of the question. I’m really hoping to reach those families. What we’re doing is more individualized, with a higher level of education and expertise.”

Ohme said Achieve fees are generally 25 percent lower than similar services available in the area. The Oak Harbor learning center also waives any registration fees and does not require expensive assessments to begin tutoring.

“A client’s mother told me last week that this is the first time her daughter has enjoyed reading,” the director said. “I also have a client who has been coming to the center for three months and has made a 12-month gain in reading skills. This happens because of the specific skill evaluation and precise instruction we provide.”

Ohme recently finished data analysis for the center. Her findings for each session quantifiably boasted impressive numbers across the board.

“Our students average one month of academic growth for every three sessions at the center,” she said.
