Please let the community know that Mr. Kiser’s calculation (Letters, Oct. 15) of taxes payable over 15 years on a new Memorial Stadium was incorrect. The tax rate of 0.19 per thousand is calculated at .00019 x 100,000.00 x 15 years. This is how you get an average of $19.00 per year.
The need to replace the obsolete and dilaptated facillity is apparent to those who took the time last Saturday and toured the facillity. The site is too small for a new facillity to be placed there. Parking is inadequate as well.
While I respect the past history and usage of the facility, it is time to meet the needs of the community now and in the future. This stadium should be where it can be used most often by the students it was intended for. Others have pointed to the need to show our respect for veterans by having a visible memorial at the new site. A committee will be appointed by the school board to take up this task after the bond passes.
I would like to thank the community members who have presented the arguments for the new stadium so well: Jill Johnson, Mark Brown, Marsha Saar, Debbie Potter, Jim Slowik, Stan Stanley, Peggy Ellis, Joe Hunt, Bob Smithson and many others who have worked so hard to make the future better for the students of our community. Thanks to the Rotary for leading the way. Thanks for the hard work and the generous and willing spirit – this exemplifies the best of Oak Harbor!
