Legion A nabs second

Oak Harbor’s Junior Legion A baseball team, coached by Mark Naymik and John Encinas, finished in second place at a three-day tournament in Mount Vernon June 23-25.

The Wildcats defeated Arlington 13-7 in their first game Friday before falling 4-0 to Timberline.

Oak Harbor followed up Saturday with a thrilling 4-3, extra-inning victory over Tacoma.

The Wildcats got off to a slow start and found themselves behind by two runs at the end of the first inning. In the fifth inning, Jared Murdy made an incredible play from left field by throwing the runner out at home plate, ending the inning and saving the go-ahead run.

OH found itself down by one run in the bottom of the sixth and final inning with two outs. Kyle Wilcox came through with a clutch hit that scored the tying run and sent the game into extra innings.

Pitcher Zach Houser held Tacoma scoreless through the next two innings, before OH pulled out the victory in the bottom of the eighth. Ben Wolfe came through with the key hit with two outs. Tacoma’s shortstop had a difficult time fielding Wolfe’s ball and his throw to first was wild, resulting in a 4-3 victory for Oak Harbor.

The Wildcats earned a 4-3 victory over Mount Vernon on Sunday behind solid defense. After grabbing the lead in the sixth, second baseman Chris Vallery and first baseman David Encinas, came through with huge plays to seal the deal.

The victory moved OH into the championship game Sunday afternoon, where the run at a championship came to an end in a 4-3 loss to Friday Harbor. Both teams took out all the stops and played the best games of the day. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Bennet Richter and the Wildcats’ defense they came up just short.

Oak Harbor’s Legion A baseball team is 8-1 in league play and one half game out of first place behind Friday Harbor (8-0). The Wildcats have three more home games. They face Ferndale at 6 p.m., Friday, July 7, Friday Harbor in a doubleheader at 12 p.m., Saturday, July 8 and Sedro-Woolley at 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 11.
