Roehl Classic

The annual Tom Roehl Round-ball Classic is set for Dec. 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This all-Whidbey Island tournament is open to alumni, family and friends from the island high schools.

A $150 donation to the Tom Roehl Memorial Scholarship Fund is recommended for each team; $15 for individual registration.

Wrestling Alumni Night

The Oak Harbor High School wrestling team is hosting an Alumni Night Tuesday, Jan. 4.

All former Wildcat wrestlers are invited to attend and will be recognized at the meet when Oak Harbor takes on Shorewood at 5:40 p.m. and Shorecrest at 7.

This is the home opener for the Wildcats; admission will be charged.

Snowrider Ski Bus

Registration is underway for this year’s Snowrider, a bus to Stevens Pass for skiers and snowboarders.

The bus has pickups in Coupeville, South Whidbey and Mukilteo.

The Youth Snowrider for children 10 to 18 runs every Saturday from Jan. 8 to Feb. 12. Stevens Pass has a variety of slopes for all abilities and lessons are available.

The Adult Snowrider will run to Stevens Pass and Mount Bakers on Tuesdays from Jan. 11 until Feb. 15.

Snowrider participants are eligible for discount lift tickets.

CWSA Shooting Clinics

Central Whidbey Sportsman’s Association will offer two free clinics covering speed steel and bowling pin match shooting.

The first is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, and will discuss speed steel match conduct and rules.

The second is 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, and will cover bowling pin match conduct and rules.

Specific topics covered include the following:

1. Safety behind the firing line and range safety.

2. Match and stage setup, how to shot stages, match management.

3. Shooting, call to the firing line, electronic timer, range officer.

4. Gun handling, preparation, ammunition, sighting, hand holds, body positioning.

5. Drawing from a holster and types to be used.

6. Score keeping, firearms to use, necessary equipment.

Different classes are offered for each match.

These clinics are free and will provide shooters with the information they need to feel comfortable when attending CWSA matches in 2011.

Clinic participants should bring their center fire or .22 rim fire pistol/revolver and ammunition. There will be minimal shooting during this clinic, and participants should bring safety glasses and ear protections if they plan to shoot.

Non-club members may participate in any club sponsored match shoots. Watch for announcements in this publication.

The clinics will be at the CWSA clubhouse and range located 2.5 miles south of Coupeville on Safari Street, which is just south of Highway 20 and Morris Road and just north of the Outlying Field. There is a sign on the highway.

Whidbey Island Running Club

The Whidbey Island Running Club, sponsored by the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District, is looking for interested runners to train for the track season.

Interested participants can contact the John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool at 675-7665 or head coach Catie Rodeheffer at 279-2196 to get information on practice times and locations.

North Whidbey Aquatic Club

The North Whidbey Aquatic Club is a competitive swimming program of the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District. It includes swimmers of all abilities and ages from 6 through college.

Tryouts occur Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the city pool from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. New swimmers should be able to swim a length of the pool in freestyle and backstroke.

The first two weeks are free.
