Citizens will have their first chance Monday to offer their two cents on $2 million of proposed cuts to Island County’s current expense fund.

The draft budget includes different levels of cuts for county departments and would result in 25 layoffs. The commissioners are asking for public input during the regular meeting at their Coupeville hearing room at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4. The budget will likely to tabled to a later date without final decisions.

The county’s draft budget is on the county’s website, but it may not clear up voters’ questions about spending and priorities. No less than three elected county officials contacted the News-Times and expressed confusion about the document, which lumps together a number of revenue sources.

Sheriff Mark Brown, for example, said the document makes it appear that some departments had significant funding increases while his office was cut.

Under the draft budget, the items on the chopping block include a nutrition program for women and babies, two maternity support programs, flu shots, six patrol deputies, three corrections deputies, a deputy prosecutor, a paralegal, the impaired driving impact panel, the 4-H coordinator and the Master Gardener coordinator are all on the proposed chopping block. The commissioners also cut the funding to senior services by 40 percent.
