‘Stand up economist’ entertains in Oak Harbor for foundation

An economist with a funny bone will bring humor to the “dismal science” when he appears in Mount Vernon and Oak Harbor this month.

On Thursday, Sept. 9, the Skagit Valley College Foundation will welcome Yoram Bauman, Ph.D., described as “the world’s first and only stand-up economist,” for two entertaining opportunities to help raise student scholarships.

A breakfast fundraiser will take place at 7:30 a.m. in McIntyre Hall, which is located at SVC’s Mount Vernon Campus.

A luncheon fundraiser will take place at 11:30 a.m. at Whidbey Golf and Country Club in Oak Harbor. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend either event.

Bauman has appeared in venues ranging from New York Improv and Seattle’s Comedy Underground, to the annual meeting of the American Economic Association. He earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Washington in 2003. He earned his MA in economics from the U.W. in 2000 and his B.A. in mathematics from Reed College in Portland, Ore., in 1995.

Since 2006, he has been the environmental economist for the U.W.’s award-winning Program on the Environment. Bauman teaches part-time at Lakeside High School and at the Bainbridge Graduate Institute. He lives in Seattle.

Among the testimonials from past events is this comment from Dr. Bill Russell, Associate Dean at Northwest Nazarene University School of Business in Idaho: “Yoram was thoroughly entertaining and kept the audience laughing, but buried in the humor were a series of pretty impressive observations about the economy, finance and the business world.”
