New banner placed at South Whidbey school

The fence outside South Whidbey High School is home to a new banner.

The Hispanic and Latinx heritage banner hangs where the Black Lives Matter banner that has been a recent source of controversy on the South End used to hang, alongside an LGBTQ Pride banner and a gratitude banner for South Whidbey educators.

The banner is dated Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. It is one of the first banners in a series planned by the district and the Associated Student Body to be changed out on a monthly basis to recognize topics such as international human rights and women’s history.

The Black Lives Matter banner has not been replaced on the fence since it was stolen for the second time in August.
