Wolves make it three straight

For the third consecutive year, the Coupeville volleyball team will make their way to Yakima to participate in the 1A state tournament.

The Wolves enter the tournament as the fifth seed after knocking off Overlake 25-12, 25-22, 25-11 to nab the last state berth.

“It wasn’t pretty getting there, but it’s a fresh start at state,” head coach Toni Crebbin said.

The state-clinching win marked the second time Coupeville had faced and defeated Overlake in the Tri-District Tournament. The Wolves also picked up a 3-0 victory in round one.

“It gave us a little confidence knowing that beat Overlake before,” Crebbin said.

Prior to their second win against Overlake, the Wolves struggled, dropping two straight matches. Kings defeated them 25-12, 25-11, 25-15, while University Prep won in three games, 25-13, 25-19, 25-20.

Coming into the season, Crebbin wasn’t sure what to expect from her young team, but she is extremely happy with what they have accomplished.

“I think we surprised a lot of people,” she said. “Now the girls just have to go and show what they can do.”

Coupeville, the only fifth seed in the tournament, faces Columbia (Burbank) in the first round of the tournament. Columbia enters the tournament with a 10-0 league record.

“We’re expecting they’re going to be tough,” Crebbin said. “We’re hoping they look past us.”

Coupeville begins tournament action at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14, at the Yakima Sundome.
