Smith runs for Congress

The 2002 race for Congress has begun.
On Thursday, Langley Republican Norman Smith announced she will run for the the Second Congressional District seat currently held by Democrat Rick Larsen.
Smith was an aide to former Congressman Jack Metcalf, who served three terms before retiring in 2000. Metcalf offered his “enthusiastic, 100 percent endorsement of Norma Smith for Congress.”
This is Smith’s second run for political office. In the 2000 election, she failed to unseat State Senator Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, in the 10th Legislative District.
Smith said major issues in her campaign for Congress will be her desire to “refocus the government’s priorities to guarantee the security of Americans, including rooting out those who are behind the world terrorism network.”
Additionally, she will push for “returning a climate of certainty to domestic and international markets” in order to strengthen the economy.
No one else has formally declared their candidacy for the Second Congressional District seat in Congress. State Rep. Kelly Barlean, R-Langley, has expressed interest in the race.
