Wolves win, face Cowboys for league lead / Baseball

An overpowering finish easily overcame a bad start as the Coupeville High School baseball team throttled host Port Townsend 17-6 in five innings Wednesday, April 25.

Now the Wolves (5-1, 11-4) are on a collision course with Chimacum (4-1, 6-7) to decide for the Olympic League pennant.

The two teams split their first two games and meet in the series finale at 4 p.m. Friday, April 27, in Coupeville.

If the Wolves win the first-place showdown, the only way for the Cowboys to jump to the top of the conference is to win out and hope Coupeville loses its final two games to Klahowya (1-5, 2-12) and Port Townsend (1-4, 1-9).

Coupeville 17, Port Townsend 6

The beginning was ugly for the Wolves. After going out in order in the top of the first inning, Coupeville committed several errors that helped the Redhawks score three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Coupeville got one run back in the top of the second when Julian Wellings singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Hoagland.

Port Townsend scored another unearned run in the bottom of the second to make it 4-1.

From there, the Coupeville offense took off.

The Wolves scored three runs in the third to tie the game, then tacked on five in the fourth and eight in the fifth.

The Redhawks finished their scoring with two runs in the fourth.

Only one of the six runs scored off Coupeville pitcher Dane Lucero was earned.

The Redhawks had their own issues on defense, allowing nine unearned runs.

Matt Hilborn and Hoagland led the Coupeville attack.

Hilborn had three hits (one a double), three runs, four RBI and two stolen bases.

Hoagland stroked two triples, scored three times and drove in three runs.

Hunter Smith added a triple, two hits, two runs and four RBI.

Joey Lippo recorded two hits, three runs and two stolen bases; and Wellings collected two hits and two runs.

Lucero and Jake Pease also singled.
