It was a loss, but the result was much better looking this time around.
The Coupeville High School boys basketball team lost 52-36 to visiting Cedar Park Christian-Bothell Friday, Jan. 25.
Eleven days prior, the Wolves lost 70-27 at CPC.
“(The) boys did a lot of good things tonight,” Coupeville coach Brad Sherman said after the game. “Two weeks ago, (the) game got pretty lopsided. Tonight I thought our guys responded well and made some good adjustments.
“(We) need some shots to start falling for us early, (and we) need to eliminate some unforced turnovers — if we do those things, we are right there.
“Great fight by our guys; (we) continue to show a lot of heart.”
Cedar Park Christian’s Luke Allen hurt the Wolves in the first half when he scored 19 of his game-high 20 points.
The junior wing pumped in 10 points in the first quarter and CPC led 14-7.
Allen then hit three consecutive three-pointers in the second period to help the Eagles (5-3, 9-9) go up 27-18 at the break.
Cedar Park Christian led 40-25 after three periods.
Jered Brown topped the Wolves in scoring with 9 points. Sean Toomey-Stout had 7, Hawthorne Wolfe and Ulrik Wells 6 each, Jakobi Pilgrim 4 and Gavin Knoblich 2.
The game was Coupeville’s final home contest of the season, and the Wolves honored their only senior, Dane Lucero, before the game.
The Wolves (1-7, 2-13) close out the regular season with two road games this week. Coupeville travels to South Whidbey (5-3, 12-6) at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, and then to Granite Falls (0-9, 2-16) Friday, Feb. 1.
Coupeville currently holds the fifth and final playoff berth from the North Sound Conference into the district tournament, which begins Monday, Feb. 4. If the Wolves lose twice this week, they could end up in a tie for fifth with Granite Falls. That would set up a tie-breaker between the two teams at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, in Coupeville.
