Wolves lose another close one

Close games have been the norm rather than the exception for the Coupeville High School soccer game this season.

And Thursday’s game against the always strong Archbishop Murphy Wildcats was another closely fought contest.

The Wildcats scored a goal in the first half and another in the second 40 minutes of action to defeat the Wolves 2-0.

“We’ve got nothing to hang our heads about,” coach Paul Mendes said the team after the game. “They have a very good ball club and you played right with them for the whole game. We can beat them the next time we play.”

Archbishop Murphy scored at the 29-minute mark of the first half when junior midfielder Ryan Mifflin beat Wolves’ goal keeper Evan Amelexum-Coleman with a shot in the lower left corner of the net.

The score remained 1-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Tyler Allen tallied the final goal of the game for the Wildcats at the 63-minute mark.

Mendes said he is very encouraged by the fact that Coupeville is competing strong against Cascade Conference opponents.

“The last three games we have been very competitive,” he said. “We just need to work on a few more things to put us over the edge, Today, they just converted their chances and we didn’t.”

Coupeville’s next home game is Thursday, April 3, against Lakewood.

Kickoff for the varsity game is set for 6 p.m.
