All three of the Coupeville High School boys basketball wins this season have been lopsided — the latest, a 79-39 shellacking of host Concrete Tuesday, Dec. 30.

“It was a good team win for not playing in a while,” coach Anthony Smith said.

The Wolves showed little rust from their 11-day layoff and received scoring help from throughout the lineup.

While Coupeville rang up nearly 80 points, only two players, Aaron Trumbull (16 points) and C.J. Smith (10), scored in double figures.

Wiley Hesselgrave, Ryan Griggs and Joel Walstad scored eight points apiece, Dalton Martin had seven, Aaron Curtin and Matt Shank six each, Risen Johnson four, Gabe Wynn three and Hunter Smith one.

Griggs added five rebounds and two steals, and Shank grabbed five boards.

The Wolves pulled away early, leading 19-10, 41-25 and 57-36 after the first three periods, and then buried the Lions 22-3 in the final period.

The game provided a tuneup for the Wolves’ next match, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at La Conner.

Coupeville (3-5) will be “put to the test,” by the 6-2 Braves, coach Smith said.

“We are more athletic but they execute extremely well,” Smith said.
