The Coupeville High School girls basketball team rebounded from a 59-21 loss at King’s Friday, Dec.16, to thump visiting University Prep 43-19 Saturday.

The big win over the Pumas was the Wolves’ first of the season after four losses. Coupeville will continue a run of four games in five days when it goes to La Conner (4-1) Monday at 4:30 p.m. and then entertains Friday Harbor (5-0) Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

After traveling south to play King’s in Shoreline, Coupeville’s game went south after the first quarter.

The Knights (3-0, 5-1) held a slim 8-6 lead after the first eight minutes, then blitzed Coupeville 12-0 in the second period to lead 20-6 at the half.

King’s continued to roll through the second half and led 49-15 heading into the final frame.

No Wolf reached double figures with Bessie Walstad leading the way with seven points. Shelby Kulz finished with five, Taya Boonstra four, Katie Smith three and Cassidi Rosenkrance two.

In the win over University Prep (4-3) of North Seattle, Coupeville excelled at the defensive end, according to coach Jackie Bykonen, where the Wolves “showed much effort.”

Offensively, Bykonen said, the Wolves “moved the ball much better and limited their turnovers.”

This time around three Coupeville players hit for double figures with Walstad leading again with 12. Rosenkrance and Smith tossed in 11 apiece. Hailey Hammer added three points, and Lauren Escalle, Boonstra and Bree Messner each chipped in with two.
