Oak Harbor High School baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Stanwood with a 3-2, eight-inning road win over the Spartans Thursday, April 18.

The victory, the Wildcats’ seventh straight, solidified Oak Harbor’s (8-5, 9-7) hold on second place in the Wesco 3A North over third-place Stanwood (5-7, 5-10) with four games left.

Oak Harbor’s game at Everett (0-11, 1-13) today, April 19, is rained out and will be played Monday at 4 p.m.

The Wildcats scored the winning run in the top of the eighth without a hit. David Kusnick walked on a full count, moved to second on a passed ball. He was replaced by pinch runner Casiano Atienza who stole third and scored on another passed ball.

Stanwood, which tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a squeeze bunt, put two on in the eighth but couldn’t punch a run home.

Leaving runners on base was a problem all day for the Spartans as Wildcat pitcher Grant Schroeder pitched out of trouble throughout the game. Stanwood had at least two base runners in six of the eight innings but could score only twice.

Schroeder finished with an eight-hitter, striking out five and walking six.

Oak Harbor scored single runs in the first two innings and then was blanked until the eighth.

In the first, the run came on an error after Jack Richter and Kusnick singled.

In the second, Andrew Snavely walked, went to third on a pair of passed balls and scored on Brent Mertins’ single.

Schroeder, who hit a double, and Mertins each finished the day with two hits.

A single, walk and double accounted for Stanwood’s first run in the first inning.
