Mike Crebbin was pleased to start his career as Oak Harbor’s head wrestling coach with a win on Tuesday night, but don’t think for a minute he’s satisfied.

Like any good coach, Crebbin immediately focused on what will make the Wildcats better after they handily defeated non-league Anacortes 51-22.

“This is our first match so we’re just going to use this as a bench mark,” he said. “It’s obvious we need to build more on a conditioning base and we need to work a lot more on our mechanics and techniques.”

In its commanding victory, Oak Harbor won six matches — five via pin — and took another three by forfeit.

OHHS junior Miles Hartt opened the night strong at 152 pounds, earning a third-round pin over Seahawk senior Joe Kirkpatrick. Up 7-4 in the final frame, Hartt rolled Kirkpatrick on his back with 41 seconds left for six points.

Along with a forfeit at 171 pounds, senior Mark Radach (189) tacked on 39-second pin that gave the Wildcats an 18-4 advantage.

Anacortes rallied back to tie the match 18-18, earning a pin at 215, a major decision at 275 and another major decision at 103, but it was all Oak Harbor from there.

Freshman Jake Daniel (112) won his first varsity match, pinning Seahawk sophomore Ryan Johnson with 1:15 into the second period. Aside from a few hand-locking penalties, Daniel was commanding in his victory.

“Jake did really well,” Crebbin said.

Two more forfeits at 119 and 140 along with an exciting 4-2 decision from senior Rob Lemme and pins from junior David Wasickanin and senior Josh Stratton helped OHHS pull away.

Oak Harbor senior captain Jeff Lang (145), the team’s only returning state participant, lost his match in a 15-1 major decision to close out the night. His opponent, Patrick Simpson, was the fourth place state finisher at the 3A level last year.

Crebbin knows the loss was hard to take, but said he’s confident it will only help Lang as the season progresses.

More than Tueday’s individual wins, Crebbin was thrilled with the little things his team did against Anacortes.

“We prevented the technical falls, we prevented the six-point pins and the kids really showed a lot of heart out there,” he said.

Oak Harbor competes this Friday and Saturday in a wrestling tournament at Blaine and begins its league season, Tuesday, Dec. 13 on the road against Snohomish.
