Unable to generate a clutch hit, the Oak Harbor High School baseball team missed a chance to upset Stanwood, losing 4-3 at home Tuesday, April 15.

Down 4-2 heading into the final inning, the Wildcats scored one run but left the bases loaded as the rally fell short.

Oak Harbor also did not score after filling the bases in the fifth inning.

Things started well for the Wildcats when they scored two runs in the first inning.

With one out, Kevin Johnson singled. Brent Mertins drove a triple over the left fielder’s head to score Johnson and hustled home himself when the fielder’s throw to third was off line.

Oak Harbor starter Jozef Mendoza made the lead stand up until the Spartans scored all four of their runs in the fourth.

Stanwood (7-2, 9-3), which rapped four of their seven hits in the inning, blended the hits with an error, walk and sacrifice fly to put up the four-spot.

Two walks and an error helped Oak Harbor score in the seventh, but the Wildcats (1-8, 1-11) couldn’t produce a hit to stay in the game.

Mertins finished 2-for-4; Nate Stanford, Brandon Bailey and Tyler Snavely added singles.

The game Wednesday, April 16, at Stanwood was rained out and is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in Oak Harbor.
