Come-from-behind victories are always a difficult proposition in any sport.
Back-to-back wins when a team falls behind early in the game are even harder.
Coming off a 9-8 home victory over Arlington March 21 for its first WesCo North win in two seasons, the Oak Harbor High School softball team squared off against Burlington-Edison in a non-league game on Monday at Hillcrest Elementary School.
The Tigers scored four runs off starting pitcher Emily Meager in the top of the first inning and although the Wildcats answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, Burlington-Edison collected 10 hits and scored 11 runs to defeat Oak Harbor 11-1 in a game called after five innings on the 10-run rule.
“We had an intensity letdown today,” coach Chris Rankin said. “We had a big, emotional win over Arlington and we played with a lot of intensity and focus against them.”
Meager gave up three hits, including a double by Rachelle Berry, in the first inning.
The Wildcats came back in the bottom of the first scoring a run on a double by Kim Mowbray, a fielder’s choice and a double by Kalya Ratliff.
After Ratliff’s hit, Burlington-Edison pitcher Lindsey Dawson set down the next 12 Oak Harbor batters in order until Samantha Shulock broke the string with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning with a line single to right field.
Amber Hamming followed with another single, but Dawson struck out Mowbray to end the game.
“They had a big pitcher who throws (hard), we struck out a lot and we just quit,” Rankin said. “She was a tough pitcher, I didn’t think she was overpowering, but she moved the ball.”
Dawson struck out 10 Oak Harbor batters in the game.
Every batter in the Burlington-Edison lineup collected at least one hit. Dawson scored three runs and Jenny Corning, along with Berry, scored two runs each.
Oak Harbor returns to WesCo North play on Friday at Snohomish.

The Wildcats’ bats were booming Friday, pounding out 12 hits in beating Arlington 9-8.
Nikki Mowbray had a 2-run home run, Jessica Kallander collected a double and a triple and Anna Skurdal had three hits.
