The 2008 spring sports season has come to an end for teams at Oak Harbor and Coupeville high schools, and 36 student athletes were selected by opposing coaches from the WesCo North and Cascade conferences as first team, second team or honorable mention all-league players.

The Oak Harbor boys and girls track teams earned the largest number of first-team selections with Meitra Smollack being honored three times.

The senior was a first-team selection for winning the league championship in the 800 and 1,600 meters. She also made all-star as a member of the Wildcats’ winning 4×200-meter relay team.

Smollack ran a personal best time to win the Class 4A state championship in the 1,600.

Junior Carson McKole was a double first-team selection for her winning performances in the 100 meters and as a member of the 4×200 relay team.

Two other relay team members, senior Krissy McGill and freshman Janessa Ramos, were included as first-team, all-league selections.

Senior Rodrick Rumble was the lone first-team competitor for the boys for his 6-4 effort which won him the league’s high jump championship.

In baseball, Oak Harbor finished sixth in the league. For his outstanding efforts in his senior year on the diamond, outfielder Chris Valencia was chosen a first-team all-star.

In softball, the Wildcats finished with a 1-15 record, but center fielder Jessica Kallander had a great year as she broke the school records for batting average, on-base percentage and doubles, earning the senior a first-team all-star selection.

The Oak Harbor soccer team also struggled through a difficult season, but opposing WesCo North coaches recognized the play of Kevin Flavin and named the junior forward a first-team all-star.

Junior Phil Reedy and senior Eric McCardle both qualified for the Class 4A state golf tournament, and were both selected at first-team all-league players, as were seniors Brittany Loveng and Anndria Sutter, who were also state qualifiers, for the Oak Harbor girls golf team.

At Coupeville High School the baseball team, which won the district championship and made it to the first round of the sweet 16 before losing 8-2 to Castle Rock, had senior pitcher Alex Evans and senior utility player Kyle Wilcox voted first-team players by opposing Cascade Conference coaches.

Coupeville’s other first-team

selection was junior Nikki Griffin who pitched and caught as a member of the softball team.
