Swim: Wildcats grab 2nd at distirct; send 4 individuals, 3 relays to state

Oak Harbor High School finished second in the 3A district swim and dive meet in Anacortes Saturday, Feb. 12, and four Wildcat individuals and three relay teams qualified for the state meet.

In the 2A district meet, Coupeville’s Cole Weinstein qualified for the state meet and finished third in the 500-yard free style (5:06.58) and fourth in the 200 free (1:55.46). Teammate Konrad Borden did not place in the 100 breaststroke.

Coupeville, a 1A school, competed in the 2A district because that’s the smallest classification the state offers in the post-season. The Wolves finished eighth with 23 points, the best among 1A schools.

In 3A, Oak Harbor placed second to Shorewood 346.5-293. The Thunderbirds, who won the 4A state title last winter, held off the Wildcats by outscoring Oak Harbor 41-14 in diving and winning two relays.

Oak Harbor coach Amy Nurvic said the ‘Cats had “a great meet” with “many fast swims.”

The top three in each event earned a trip to the state meet Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18 and 19, at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Wildcat winners were Price Hu (100 butterfly, 54.79) and Jacob Jepsen (100 backstroke, 55.15).

Jepsen (2:01.99) and Hu (2:02.06) also went 2-3 in the 200-yard individual medley.

Yale Rosen grabbed two seconds (50 free, 22.62; 100 breaststroke, 1:02.22), and Brandon Vagt finished second to Hu in the fly (56.28).

All three Oak Harbor relay teams placed second: 200 medley relay, Jacob Jepsen, Rosen, Vagt, Josh Jepsen, 1:42.79; 200 free relay, Josh Jepsen, Jacob Jepsen, Hu, Rosen, 1:33.88; and 400 free relay, Devin Schell, Caley Powers, Vagt, Hu, 3:32.29.

The top 12 in each event scored at district.

Fourth: Powers, 100 fly, 57.94.

Fifth: Schell, 200 free, 1:58.21; Josh Jepsen, 200 IM, 2:05.24; 100 breast, 1:04.63; Ben Cardinal, 100 back, 1:02.56.

Sixth: Schell, 100 free, 53.98; Ryan Cuajunco, 100 back, 1:03.15.

Seventh: Powers, 200 free, 1:57.79; John Kaltenbach, diving, 207.35; Bon Jarik Bainco, 100 breast, 1:08.79.

Eighth: Cardinal, 50 free, 24.09; Brett Vagt, 100 fly, 1:02.68.

Ninth: Brett Vagt, 200 IM, 2:17.75; Blake Leech, diving, 160.4; Levy, 100 free, 54.44.

10th: Matt Reith, diving, 160.3.

11th: Kevin Levy, 50 free, 24.25.

12th: David Kusnik, 100 breast, 1:15.07.
