Soccer: Sultan scores in OT to edge Wolves

It was April 1, but it was no joke.

Sultan scored 50 seconds into sudden death overtime to stop the Coupeville High School boys soccer team 2-1 at Mickey Clark Field Thursday, April 1.

In the first half and with a strong wind at their back, the Turks, after several near misses, finally punched home the match’s first goal with 5:35 left before the break. Earlier in the half they hit the post and cross bar on two other shots.

Even with the advantage of the wind, Sultan was outshot by Coupeville 15-12 before the break.

In the second half the Wolves had the benefit of the wind and dominated the action, recording a 12-4 shot advantage. Spencer Tack scored for Coupeville with 9:15 left in the game to even the score at 1.

The Turks (2-2, 2-4) started with the first possession in overtime and against the wind, and Coupeville never controlled the ball. Sultan earned a corner kick and scored in a flurry of action in front of the goal to get the game-winner.

The loss by the Wolves was their fourth in five matches, all by one goal. Oddly, even with a 1-4 record, Coupeville has outscored its opponents 10-9 for the season.

Coach Paul Mendes said, “We have been in every game and taking them to the last minute. We are focusing now on getting better, on sharpening our play.”

The Wolves travel to Lakewood (1-2, 1-4) Saturday, April 3, for a 2 p.m. match.
