Coupeville punched in two goals then hung on to win 2-1 over the South Whidbey girls soccer team Thursday, Sept. 23, at Mickey Clark Field.

The win was the first in four conference matches for the Wolves and evened their season mark at 3-3.

Five minutes into the match Amanda d’Almeida drilled in a penalty kick from 15 yards out to get Coupeville on the board.

In the second half, Emily Burchfield scored with 22 minutes left on an assist from Chelsea Harpe.

The Falcons (1-3, 1-4) countered with a goal with 10 minutes left but couldn’t get the equalizer.

After Tuesday’s loss to King’s, coach Mike Thornton said the squad watched the game film and picked up some lessons that helped in the win over South Whidbey. He said the seniors showed strong leadership with their mantra “You have to want to play.”

Thornton added, after the current win, “It was nice to see smiles on their faces.”

The Wolves go to Granite Falls Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 5 p.m. and then entertain Sultan Thursday, Sept. 30, at 6.
