Coming off Tuesday’s 5-4 victory over Everett, Wednesday’s WesCo North baseball game between the host Oak Harbor Wildcats and Snohomish was a wild one.

Oak Harbor staked the Spartans to a 10-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning, but then the fireworks began erupting.

The Wildcats put four runs on the board in the bottom half of the fifth to keep the game alive and that was only the beginning.

By the time the dust had settled and all the base runners had crossed home plate, Stanwood came away with its third league win of the season, 20-11.

“When you stake a team to a 10 run lead, there isn’t much you can do,” coach Tyson Van Dam said. “Overall, it wasn’t a very good performance by us.”

Kian Mebane started on the mound for the Wildcats and was touched up by the Spartans for nine runs in two plus inning of work before being relieved by Jay Strout with one out in the top of the third.

The left-hander held Stanwood off and gave up just one run until Wade Burns took over the pitching duties in the top of the sixth inning.

Trailing 10-4, Burns surrendered three additional runs in the sixth to give Stanwood a 13-4 advantage, but the Spartans weren’t done yet.

With two out in the top of the seventh, Stanwood scored seven times off the fourth Oak Harbor pitcher, Shea Weaver, to up the margin to 20-4.

Despite trailing by 16 runs, the Wildcats didn’t quit and battered Stanwood relief pitchers David Gerdes and Mike Vaughn for seven runs of their own in the bottom half of the seventh inning.

Stanwood out hit Oak Harbor 18-9 in the game and the Wildcats also committed four errors.

Kurtis Weaver, Stout and Sam Wolfe all stroked doubles for Oak Harbor, 2-4 league, 4-5 overall.

Oak Harbor returns to home-field action Friday, April 17, squaring off against Monroe in a 4 p.m. game.
