Records fall as Aquajets spear Marlins

The North Whidbey Aquatic Club Aquajets scored 854 points and left the Mighty Marlins Swim Club of Marysville in their wake winning a home dual meet at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool Sunday, Oct. 5.

The Marlins tallied 344 points, less than half the home team’s total.

John Hu had a big afternoon in the open boys division winning five events, and teammate Jarik Bainco was a four-event winner in the 12-and-under boys division.

In addition to winning five events, Hu also set a team record in the 400-meter freestyle in a time of 4:22.06.

Other team record setters included Ciara Hu in the open girls division 100 butterfly (1:10.82), Laura Rosen in the 11-to-12-year-old girls 50 backstroke (33.75) and Samantha Hines in the 8-and-under girls 25 breaststroke (25.68).

Olivia Tungate set two team records at the meet in the 8-and-under girls division with a 50 freestyle time of 40.48 and the 200 individual medley at 3:38.57.

Team records were also set in five relays: 8-and-under boys 100 freestyle with Cullen Wood, Noah Allison, Jerrin Concepcion and Justin Poblador winning in a time of 1:27.34; 10-and-under girls 200 freestyle, with Marissa Morris, Molly Vagt, Mara Powers and Laura Rodeheffer clocking in at 2:34.42.

The senior girls 200 freestyle team of Karina Concepcion, Kasha Trisler, Rachel Weinstein and Meghan Scott set a record with a time of 2:00.42, and the 12-and-under girls 200 medley team of Laura Rosen, Olivia Meyer, Kennedy Trisler and Emily Huffer were clocked at 2:26.52 to establish yet another record.

Finally, the senior girls 200 medley team of Meghan Scott, Rachel Weinstein, Kasha Trisler and Karina Concepcion swam a time of 2:18.17 to set the final record at the meet.

Other NWAC event winners included Nick Fromme, Samantha Hines, Joey Jepsen, Olivia Meyer, Marissa Morris, Justin Poblador, Kasha Trisler and Cullen Wood.

The Aquajets had numerous athletes achieve 100 percent best times including Lexy Cribb, Athena De Leon Guerrero, Jerrin Concepcion, Leanne Empinado, Haruna Hamamoto, Justin Erickson, Jacob Jepsen, Sabrina Kiani, Clayton Livermore, Serena Montano, Danae Nash, Jillian Pape, Lauryn Plush, Brandon Robison, Matt Stevens, Chris Trisler, Olivia Tungate and Kennedy Trisler.

NWAC competed Oct. 18 and 19 at the Bellingham Challenge, where it fielded a team of 76 athletes.

NWAC is a competitive swimming program of the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District. It includes swimmers of all abilities and ages from age 6 through college. Tryouts are at the city pool every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. New swimmers should be able to swim a length of the pool in freestyle and backstroke. The first two weeks are free.
